What the...?

Sun Jul 5, 2009, 4:47 AM
Against my better judgment, I bought a book called "twilight", wondering what all the fuss was about. I heard it was bad, I heard it was good. But really, was it just an overreaction? I mean, no published book can be that bad, can it?

...

Well, I read through it, and I'm still wondering what the hell I had just read.
It's basically about a girl called Bella Swan who moves to Forks (but doesn't want to go to Forks, because...?), who meets a guy named Edward Cullen. And boy, does the story like to hammer it into our heads, how perfect, perfect, angel, sparkly smile, chiseled chest, marble statue, Edward is. I ended up laughing. One action scene occurs about page 400, which is poorly written (all of it is badly written), just a few lines, and the worst thing is, Bella falls unconscious. Then they go to prom. YAY!!!!!!!!

All the characters are annoying, whiny, and unappealing. There was nothing likable about them.

Bella is a complete Mary Sue. The first day she comes to school everyone was hitting on her, I mean everyone. Especially when the school dance was coming up, all the guys were asking her, even the one who almost ran her down. Is this normal? And she's obviously smart, seeing that she was in the top class in science in her previous school, and already did most of the course work before she moved. Her only flaw, is her clumsiness, but it's written in a way that sounds stupid and seems that it was put there for the heck of it.

And Edward, the flawless bastard, who even when the rain soaked his hair and clothes, still looked like a model out of a hair gel commercial. No joke. Even his voice is of an angel, musical, wonderful, etc. The descriptions never let up. But sometimes I swear his behaviour is similar to bipolar disorder. One line he's all happy and shit, the next he's cold and demanding, not to mention possessive.
As he says: 'I'm not angry at you, Bella.' I beg to differ.

The book is filled with such memorable lines such as: 'You're my type of heroin', 'I love you.' "I reminded", and 'so the lion fell in love with the lamb (and thought about having lamb chops for dinner)'. How romantic.

The best part, finding out the reason why Edward doesn't want to come into the sunlight. He's just too shiny.

Why are you being so emo about it, Edward? You're a walking bling thing! No one's going to think you're a monster, because you're covered in diamonds.

And why does the whole Cullen family (except for the doctor and the wife) feel compelled to go to high school? I thought they were there, looking for young victims to drink from...

...

Just leave me to cry in the corner. I've had enough.

:giggle: Lol, your entry seriously made me crack up, because now that I think about it, what you said is all very true! I won't lie, I love the twilight series (more specifically the romance) but it has lots of flaws. It's not up there with the likes of Harry Potter, and it's not the most original of ideas - I swear vampire romances have been done a million times already, you see it so often, even in Inuyasha fanfiction (of which I have to admit, I'm guilty of too). Really, all the author's done is take a 'slightly' different twist on an overused concept.

Having said that, I still enjoy the books, I'm a hopeless romantic, so it was hard not to get addicted :) Film doesn't really do it any justice though :(

Well, once I was compelled to read it but, after the comments or reviews I've read, my thoughts were more around the line "Why should I put myself through this torture?" Even though, I'm that kind of person that wants to research or read about what she is against, at least to know why... didn't go through. After all, it's a book or a collection which seems more like a bad written fanfiction, and that I've got enough on the web! :D

Sorry you spent money! Last thought, maybe the main plot is not so bad but the problem is a bad writer? :P LOL

LOL - I heard that the third book is so bad a lot of people took it back so she couldn't get credit for the sales - lots of it is blank pages and people were not amused they paid full price for that.

If you haven't, read Harry Potter or Eragon instead. They are good and worth the read. If you do like vampires, everyhone says that the "Southern Vampire Chronicles" that HBO's True Blood is based on is very good, in fact I think you can find them on line.

From what I've heard from people I trust, the "Twilight" fanfiction tends to be better than the actual story, though I do get a chuckle of vampires "sparkling". :XD:

I've never read/watched Twilight and hopefully I never will! If you want to read a good book, I suggest Harry Potter, Eragon, and Silverwing! (Read Silverwing, it's a great book!)

my niece is pushing this series on me and i refuse to read it-- seriously, pushing it-- one would think it's drugs.

fisrt-- i will not read of the ingestion of blood-- no vamps for me!

second-- i had heard so many intelligent people whose opinions i respect shoot it down that even if it hadn't included the ingestion of blood, there would have been no way i would have wasted my time.

i am sincerely sorry you wasted valuable and precious brain matter to such senseless drivel.

a really wonderful and amazing story is the 'outlander' series by diana gabaldon. it is a historical novel that includes men kilts, supernatural time travel, and most especially-- men in kilts!
